Bill for Councillor Free Speech
A One Nation MP has proposed changes to the Local Government Act, inspired by an incident involving a Mt Barker councillor.
One Nation MLC Sarah Game introduced the Local Government (Health and Safety Duties) Amendment Bill 2025 to Parliament last month. The Bill states that elected members must “take reasonable care” that their actions do not “adversely affect the health and safety” of other councillors.
Dr Game referred to an incident in which Cr Rebecca Hewett - the One Nation candidate for Mayo - stormed out of a council meeting after her speech was interrupted by six points of order from fellow councillors.
Cr Hewett was speaking to a motion calling for the council to engage with the community on how residents regarded council supported events, having previously questioned council funding for a Survival Day event initially scheduled for January 26.
Dr Game said her Bill would make it easier for councillors to speak up for their constituents “without fear of being silenced by other elected members”.
The Bill is before the Legislative Council.
