Sarah Game to move Freedom of Speech provision

On Wednesday, One Nation MLC Sarah Game submitted a proposal to amend Section 75G of the Local Government Act, claiming it would “restore democracy” and prevent councils from silencing elected members.

In November, Adelaide City councillor Henry Davis was ejected under the Act’s health and safety protocols while debating CBD parking restrictions. He later criticised the council as “out of touch.” Ms Game said the proposed changes would ensure councillors could “speak up and speak out” without fear of being silenced.

“Clearly, Adelaide City Council Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith has a deep-seated resentment of Cr Davis,” Ms Game told state parliament, stating that his removal was “deeply concerning.” She argued that decisions like these should be made by an independent body rather than the Lord Mayor.

Ms Game insists her proposal is about “freedom of speech” and ensuring democracy remains strong at the grassroots level.
