Grandcarers’ helping hand from Sarah Game

One Nation’s SA MLC, Sarah Game, has secured $50,000 from the SA Labor Government for a group that helps grandparents and other full-time informal carers pay for things like school uniforms and excursions.

Ms Game’s advocacy resulted in a life-changing grant for Grandcarers SA, which supports over 1300 people who provide care for over 2000 children, but are unable to receive state government allowances.

The money will go to the group’s Education & Development Fund.

“As a mother of three, I feel passionately that all children should be given the same opportunities to grow and thrive – physically, emotionally and academically,” Ms Game said.

“Back in November I told parliament about the amazing work Grandcarers SA has been doing since 2002, and while advocating for this group I’ve had multiple meetings with CEO Mike Feszczak.

“This money will change so many lives for the better.”

Mr Feszczak paid tribute to the efforts of Ms Game in securing the funding.

“Sarah Game… has been an outstanding advocate for Grandcarers SA and our campaign to ‘fund grandparent carers’,” Mr Feszczak said.

“As a result of a discussion… where we advised her about the impact and needs of our Education & Development Fund, Sarah immediately advocated on our behalf to Premier Peter Malinauskas.”

Mr Feszczak said Ms Game’s intervention, with the approval and support of both Premier Malinauskas and Child Protection Minister Katrine Hildyard, ensured the EDF would remain solvent for the remainder of 2025.

“This will enable Grandcarers SA to continue to support much-needed education and development purchases for children in the care of grandparents and other full-time informal carers through the EDF,” he said.

Ms Game said grandparent often face difficulties in caring for their grandchildren full-time, including financial constraints as a result of their often-unplanned additional responsibilities.
