Mark Latham’s Column on Saving Australia Day

One of the strange things about politics today is the attempt by Left-wing activists to demonise ‘nationalism’.

For normal people, loving one’s country is a natural feeling. It gives them a sense of belonging, the comfort of having a clear national identity.

Most Australians are proud of our country’s achievements. For many decades, this was the unifying purpose of Australia Day: celebrating the greatness of our nation and the Western civilisation that arrived here on 26 January 1788.

We know Australia is a wonderful place because so many people from overseas want to come here (often by any means possible).

But in recent years, the Green-Left has tried to turn Australia Day into a day of division. They want to ‘change the date’ or even abandon the celebrations altogether.

The Australia-haters have come from within. They want to make us feel guilty about our love of country and ashamed of our national day.

As Melbourne’s Tarneen Onus-Williams screamed at a protest rally on January 26 last year, “F— Australia, hope it f—ing burns to the ground”.

Hatred of this kind is underpinned by hypocrisy. The Left say they support policies like public education and Medicare, but these services are only available in Australia because of the civilisation that arrived here in 1788.

It’s not a statement of supremacy but rather, an undeniable reality to acknowledge the sophisticated technologies of the West – the housing, the architecture, the engineering, the transport and information systems that have benefited so many Australians.

This in itself is worth celebrating.

Opinion polling has shown that over 70 per cent of people support Australia Day on its traditional date.

They feel no guilt for who we are, no direct responsibility for 19th century mistakes towards Indigenous Australians.

Sensible people know you cannot rewrite history; you can only learn from it.

Australia was not invaded – it was settled.

The Left rely on two big lies in attacking Australia Day. First, that 26 January 1788 was ‘Invasion Day’.

Yet there was no warfare, no organised military resistance. The First Fleet came here with convicts in chains, under guard; it was not an invasion force.

The second lie the Left peddle is that Australia Day is a recent invention and can easily be changed. In fact, the early settlers celebrated each anniversary of the First Fleet’s arrival and on 26 January 1818, Governor Macquarie made it a public holiday.

The challenge for modern citizenship is to reconcile the various loyalties we feel in a more complex, interconnected world: the way in which we identify with our local community, the nation we love and the ideals of good international citizenship.

These loyalties need not be in conflict. They can easily coexist.

In political debate, only the Green-Left argues that one form of identity is superior to all others. They want a world of open borders and the mass movement of people, a world in which ‘globalism’ triumphs and the nation-state fades away.

That’s why they attack nationalism so belligerently and try to belittle Australia Day.

What the protestors don’t seem to understand is that 26 January is much more than a party day. Sure, we celebrate Australia’s many achievements, but it’s also a time for reflecting on Australian history and adding to Indigenous reconciliation.

The strong character and role of Captain Arthur Phillip should always be remembered. He brought the First Fleet from the other side of the world and settled it in a harsh and difficult place. Along with great men like Macquarie, he helped turn a penal colony into a civilisation.

If not for 1788 Australia would have remained technologically stagnant.

Historians have highlighted that up to about the year 1700 Aborigines enjoyed a quality of life comparable to the average farming person in Europe.

However, with the inventions of the Industrial Revolution, Europe quickly raced ahead while Indigenous Australia was left behind, a victim of distance and isolation.

Aboriginal society had not invented the wheel or a written language. It was made up of 300 often-warring nomadic tribes.

Without European settlement, no Aboriginal person would ever have accessed decent housing, healthcare or education.

The challenge now is to make these opportunities universal, so that every Indigenous Australian enjoys a ‘fair go’.

While better policies are needed, no one can say that past efforts have been perfunctory. Today, for every dollar of spending on a non-Indigenous Australian, our governments spend two dollars on Aboriginal welfare – not the work of a heartless country.

Ultimately the Leftists attacking Australia Day cannot even agree on an alternative date.

It would be strange indeed to leave this issue in the hands of people who don’t even like Australia and the things we stand for.

Maybe the Green Left needs to forget about Australia Day and concentrate instead on creating a holiday that reflects their unique interests in life.

An International-Tree-Hugging-Solar-Worshipping-People-Smuggling-Sex Changing-LGBTIQWTF Day is more their thing.

    Hi Pauline,
Thank you for all you do for Australia and Australians and the pride of our Country.
I would like to see the date changed also, just the date, for Australians, namely our Aboriginal Peoples so they are not reminded constantly of the invasion, that is what it was, not a discovery.
The old British Empire is gone and we have a new young great Royal Family.
I understand your concern and yes give some people a inch they take a million miles with regards to the same sex marriage plebicide which should never have happened they should have been given this right years ago, just don’t marry in Churches or Faiths oppossed which is their right also, I hear about the crap storm that which has followed and it is unacceptable and disgusting.
With Regards to our Indigenous People I would not Celebrate the memory of the genocide of my Ancestors, a day of mourning.
Change the date, so they can Celebrate it too, not change the events nor the good of our Country and the amazing people past and present and hopefully the future.
And No, I am not a new Australian, I was born here, I did not immigrate here at anytime so that rubbish expression annoys me.
Yes, I understand your concern about fundamentalists and the University and school system brainwashing which is also a dangerous concern, which they are trying to violently force on the Children and young people.
    Regards,
    Lisa

      Hi Lisa,
I am are strong believer that goods things come out of bad things. You choose to believe that it was an invasion, and thank God we have the freedom to choose, however I have one question for you. If the English had not settled or invaded as you like to call it, just where would the indigenous people be today? For that matter where would any of us be today? Would you still have been born here or even born at all?
Do you honestly believe that the small Aboriginal population that first inhabited this beautiful vast country of ours, could have kept it all to themselves. Australia is surrounded by Asian nations, it would have only been a matter of time before they populated this country instead and the indigenous people would have lost their identity.
Many good people came over from English speaking countries and showed nothing but love towards the indigenous people and taught them to read and write.
Today we are dealing with are whole set of new challenges, as our Australia is being slowly raped by overseas interests. Do you think they care about any of us? Even some of our own politicians are betraying us for their own selfish interests and ambitions. If we don’t put out differences aside and stand as one united nation, the Australia as we know it, will no longer exit.
Whilst it is kind of you to stand up for the indigenous people and a date change to further separate them from non indigenous people, it is not wise.
A nation divided against itself will fall. That is why nationalism is so important. So what do you say Lisa, can we all put out own interests aside and stand as one and celebrate Australia Day for what it truly represents, not just one day with a date, but a way of life for all who are fortunate enough to have been born here or settled here because the English first landed here. That way we can fight the true enemy who will not only rob us of our national pride but the freedom that comes with it, the freedom that both aboriginals and non aboriginals alike enjoy.

      Kind regards
      Ingrid

Hi Ingrid, Wise words – well said. I note that the Jewish nation is not seeking an apology or some form of compensation from the current German government for the atrocities committed ‘during WW II in more recent times (and for those lacking in history that was 1939 to 1942) where 5.5 million Jews were exterminated by the Nazi regime. Further, I possibly may have missed the action taken by the UK government to take action against Italian government for the military invasion about 410, then against the the Anglo Saxon military invasion around 470 (by the then Netherlands, Germany and Denmark) where an estimated 1 million inhabitants were slaughtered, then against the Viking lands when their military invasion occurred in 925. It should be noted that there was no military invasion or subsequent military action conducted during the settlement (that’s right SETTLEMENT) of Australia but rather of convicts under guard in 1788. Disputes within the colony were undertaken by the respective police units, there for these were ‘state’ actions and not military actions as such. So here we are in 2019 where thanks to the far left and various agitator groups, we are no further advanced in progressive reconciliation (not withstanding the ‘demanded’ apology has been provided by a former prime minister), we have a country with more than one ‘national’ flag (every other country appears to have realised that ‘one flag one nation’ is integral to that countries identity and solidarity) and that every Australian citizen should be treated equally, yet some Australians have additional ‘considerations’ due to their heritage. I haven’t seen a court case yet where ancestors of the original british convicts were provided disposition for the ‘harsh and inhumane conditions under which they were subjected over 200 years ago or from the Chinese community for the prejudices and injustices they were subjected to during the ‘gold rush’ era. I realise I have opened a ‘Pandora’s Box’ here for an enterprising legal firm to pursue these actions, but then if we wish to not progress as one nation, then this is yet another series of avenues of past historical fact upon which to keep the divide of this great nation of ours well open instead of pursuing a path of true forgiveness of acknowledged wrongs of the past and moving forward together in true solidarity as One Nation. Ones wound won’t heal, if you don’t tend to your wound to then allow the healing to take place….

Keep up the good work Mark and One Nation team. The UN plot is to flood functional, democratic, free Western countries with unwanted immigrants. This dilutes the existing culture and reduces nationalism so that globalism can become the norm. After all, if most people come from somewhere else, they don’t give a shit for the country in which they are living – it’s just a convenience. The next step is the one world, New World Order which, under the UN is essentially communism – or worse, Islamism. We can’t afford to lose our country.

Hi Lisa, It was NOT an invasion – simply people wanting to live a NEW LIFE in a Country that wasn’t developed. I’m 62yrs old & 4th Generation Australian, I have all the paperwork to prove it. I have the Australian Flag up the pole every day. I was even selected to go to Gallipoli on the 100th Anniversary 25th April 2015 as my Granfather ran up the beach the same time I did 100years ago.
I have never been so proud. I represented my Family & Friends. I met and drank with many Turks over 2 weeks my brother in law & I were there. Time has healed those dreadful battles. We should do the same in this Country, we have Australia Day….Don’t fight to change it !

Australia Day as a day where we all celebrate the positives this great country of ours has to offer (as the 13 thousand who chose this day to become new citizens would attest – and my sincere welcome to them), has been overshadowed by protest marches supported by ‘key figures’ and given undeserved extensive media coverage. Some facts: by a certain group calling our Australia Day as ‘Invasion Day’ is showing complete disrespect to all of us (including our newest citizens) who are aware of and have apologised for the injustices of the past. May I suggest that the 26 of January was not the first day that the country we know as Australia today was seized by proclamation by the crown of England. It was actually proclaimed as provided in Captain Cook’s diary in response to the Secret Instructions provided to Cook from the crown that, in the event that he found the Continent, he should chart its coasts, obtain information about its people, cultivate their friendship and alliance, and annex any convenient trading posts in the King’s name. Cook reached the southern coast of New South Wales on 20 April 1770. He sailed north, landing at Botany Bay one week later, before continuing to chart the Australian coast all the way north to the tip of Queensland. There, on Possession Island, just before sunset on Wednesday 22 August 1770, he declared the coast a British possession:
“Notwithstand[ing] I had in the Name of His Majesty taken possession of several places upon this coast, I now once more hoisted English Coulers and in the Name of His Majesty King George the Third took possession of the whole Eastern Coast . . . by the name New South Wales, together with all the Bays, Harbours Rivers and Islands situate upon the said coast, after which we fired three Volleys of small Arms which were Answerd by the like number from the Ship”.
Cook had recorded signs that the coast was inhabited during the voyage north, and here he noted as he returned to the ship the great number of fires on all the land and islands about them, a certain sign they are Inhabited. (Reference:Cook’s Secret Instructions, c.1768. Courtesy National Library of Australia. p2). So in essence, Australia was initially ‘invaded’ from the perspective of the over 600 Aboriginal nations at that time (as opposed to the so called current thought that all persons of aboriginal descent are one homogeneous group – they are not as provided by the Aboriginal Map of Australia and current aboriginal peoples who identify by their ‘mob’) by the British on August 22. If the ‘invasion’ mantra is to be maintained on those wishing to keep the divide in Australia as wide open as possible for as long as possible, the subsequent English ‘invasion’ next occurred on the 24 January when the ‘first fleet’ landed at Botany Bay. So hijacking our Australia Day on the 26 January as ‘invasion day’ by the ‘left’ is technically incorrect as are a number of other issues in respect to the notion of a ‘united’ Aboriginal nation demanding a treaty that some political parties are currently courting. Happy to argue that one on facts at a later date. In the interim, I hope you all enjoyed what this country has to offer on our special day.🇦🇺️
