Port Lincoln RSL Represented at Event
PORT Lincoln RSL Sub-Branch was represented at the second Parliamentary Friends of Veterans event, held this month at Parliament House.
Sub-branch president Gary Clough joined a long list of SA politicians in Adelaide to hear about two important support programs for local veterans, at the event organised by SA One Nation Member of the Legislative Council Sarah Game.
The two key speakers were from The Headstone Project and Open Door. The Headstone Project aims to ensure all Australian World War I veterans who served overseas have their final resting places suitably marked.
Open Door is a Flinders University-based research hub that disseminates information to academics, practitioners and veterans to ultimately improve the wellbeing of veterans and their families.
Ms Game, who secured $75,000 to preserve the Port Lincoln RSL's Garden of Remembrance and toured the first stage of the upgrades last month with Mr Clough, said the “bipartisan support” for her initiative underlined its importance.
“It highlights why I wanted to organise an event like this,” she told the Parliament House gathering.
“Because I wanted to make sure there was an opportunity for all sides of politics to come together to engage with the veteran community, to network, to learn and to be educated...so we can advocate for you better.”
Veterans Affairs Minister Joe Szakacs and his Liberal counterpart Adrian Pederick both spoke at the event.
Other South Australian politicians on hand included Fraser Ellis, Geoff Brock, Penny Pratt, Cressida O'Hanlon, Nat Cook and Lucy Hood.
In his short speech, Minister Szakacs lauded “the incredible work of these two groups”.
