Sarah continues regional fact-finding
One Nation MLC Sarah Game’s commitment to hearing from SA’s often-ignored regions continued with her latest trip though the state’s Limestone Coast district earlier this month.
Sarah Game MLC in Mount Gambier, SA, recently with (from left) dairy industry representative Tracey Cowie, local wine company operator Peter Balnaves, potato farmer Terry Buckley, and former SA-Victoria Cross Border Commissioner Liz McKinnon.
Ms Game spent two days in the region, talking to locals – including several primary industry leaders – about their concerns spanning a multitude of issues.
While in Mount Gambier, Sarah spoke to crayfishing representatives about ongoing trade restrictions and the despised imposition of the new big brother-style VMS (vessel monitoring system).
At the same function, she also spoke to representatives from the wine grape, dairy and potato-growing industries.
Common themes included safety concerns stemming from mobile phone black spots, power costs, and predictions of a disastrous fallout should the embattled Rex Airlines withdraw its regional service from Mount Gambier.
The atrocious state of some local roads, including the Princes Highway, which connects Mount Gambier to Millicent, was also a popular point of discussion.
“I drove that road and it was in an atrocious state,” Sarah said.
“It was very dangerous, particularly in the poor weather conditions I encountered on the day, and was full of potholes.
“As a result, I am writing to the relevant federal minister asking for a ‘please explain’.”
Continuing her consistent advocacy for men’s health, Sarah also took the opportunity to call into the flourishing Millicent Men’s Shed, where members are running an outstanding educational program with local school children, aimed mainly at potentially disengaged kids.
A visit to the Coonawarra Penola RSL also allowed Sarah to hear from members about some of the issues facing both the sub-branch, and the town.
“They were also very concerned about their health services,” Ms Game said.
“In particular the fact they haven’t had a regular GP over the past decade.”
Sarah’s next planned rural trip – during a parliamentary break – will be to the state’s Yorke Peninsula later in 2024.
