Holding Politicians Accountable: Lee Hanson Demands Real Oversight and Integrity

With Australians battling a cost-of-living crisis, Lee Hanson is calling out the growing disconnect between everyday families and the politicians elected to serve them. Appearing from Tasmania, Lee Hanson condemned the repeated misuse of taxpayer funds by government MPs — behaviour she says “does not pass the pub test” and would never be tolerated in any ordinary workplace.

Referencing reports of luxury travel, expensive meals and questionable perks taken at public expense, Lee Hanson argued that hiding behind the excuse of “it’s within the rules” is no longer acceptable. If the rules allow this behaviour, she says, then the rules must change.

“When Australians are working multiple jobs to stay afloat, we cannot have politicians jet-setting around on taxpayer dollars,” Lee said. A single dinner costing more than $1,200, she argued, shows just how out of touch some MPs have become.

Lee Hanson is calling for stronger independent oversight, tighter spending guidelines, and a transparent review process that prevents politicians from abusing public money. She believes a watchdog — separate from government influence — should monitor travel, spending, entitlements and perks to ensure taxpayer funds are used responsibly.

But Lee Hanson also wants accountability to extend beyond financial misconduct. She says politicians should face consequences for making election promises they never intend to keep.

“If they don’t deliver, they should be held to account,” she said. “Why shouldn’t politicians face penalties for breaking commitments? In any other job, you don’t get rewarded for failing.”

As trust in politics continues to erode, She argues that only meaningful reform — real oversight, stricter rules, and consequences for dishonesty — can restore Australians’ faith in their elected representatives.
