Big Baz Rolls Up To Your House

A Queensland MP has confessed to using the electoral roll to track down and visit voters who make negative social media comments about him.

Labor MP for Rockhampton Barry O'Rourke said he did this as a “bit of karma”, and while it was “a little bit stupid” he could pay these people a visit as he was a “fairly big fella”.

Mr O'Rourke made the comments during a local radio interview on Monday morning when the discussion veered to the impact of social media on political discourse.

He decried “keyboard warriors” who felt they could make nasty comments behind a veil of supposed anonymity.

“So quite often people put those really negative yucky comments and then I go to Facebook and I track down who they are. Then I see if they're on the electoral roll and if they are ... I love going around to visit,” Mr O'Rourke said.

“And you should see them, they turn into the most placid people and just so nice to your face.

“And I just think, a bit of karma, I love it, you know it's probably a little bit stupid of me to do it sometimes. But as I said, I'm a fairly big fella.”

Mr O'Rourke, asked if he sought to intimidate through his actions, said there was “never any excuse for abuse or intimidation, online or in the community”.

“I'm always willing to listen to the diverse views of the people I represent,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Premier Steven Miles said he “encouraged all MPs to be out in the community talking directly to their constituents about the issues that concern them”.

The Premier's office did not directly address questions about whether the behaviour was intimidatory or acceptable.

One Nation candidate for the neighbouring electorate of Keppel, James Ashby, said Mr O'Rourke's behaviour should be “referred to the Crime and Corruption Commission” and “condemned” by the Premier as unacceptable.

“This is the type of behaviour you'd expect from the Russian or Chinese regimes, not a member of the Queensland government,” Mr Ashby said.

“It's frightening to know Mr O'Rourke likes to make inappropriate use of the Queensland electoral roll to intimidate people who say something he doesn't like.”

A spokeswoman for the Electoral Commission of Queensland said under law an MP is “authorised to use the information of the electoral roll for purposes relevant to the performance of the MP's duties”.

The ECQ did not comment on whether or not Mr O'Rourke's use of the electoral roll was acceptable.
