New indigenous minister McCarthy confused by secret land grabs
No-one’s going to miss Linda Burney, the former Labor indigenous Australians minister who failed so spectacularly to deliver the voice to Parliament.
There was a faint hope the new minister, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, might have a better grasp of the realities of indigenous policy but this was blown away by One Nation this week.
In a question to the new minister on Monday, Senator Malcolm Roberts asked if she supported the secret plan to give away freehold land in 15 Queensland communities to aboriginal coroporations with little to no community consultation.
The minister said no, but only because she insisted there were no secret deals or ‘secretiveness’ and went on to describe One Nation’s ‘Queensland for all Queenslanders’ policy as “running down Aboriginal people”.
Where’s the “running down” in a policy which insists on equal rights for all and special rights for none?
Then on Wednesday, Senator Pauline Hanson asked the minister to share the details of the land grabs she told Senator Roberts weren’t secret – she couldn’t. Senator Hanson then pointed out that Queensland Labor premier Steven Miles had stated publicly the land claims made under the state’s Aboriginal Lands Act were treated confidentially.
It looks like the new Minister for Indigenous Australians is off to a shaky start. Until all Australians have a fair say about these secret land grabs, the reconciliation so revered by Senator McCarthy is a long way off.
