Thorpe finally put in her place – for now
It won’t stop her.
For too long, the Senate has enabled the appalling behaviour of extremist thug Lidia Thorpe.
It’s only encouraged the delusional self-styled ‘blak’ activist and former Green to escalate her toddler tantrums in the Senate and in public. She’s way past the point of no return.
It’s rare that senators get formally censured, but Thorpe copped it on Monday for her recent abuse of King Charles. Was she chagrined? Chastised? No. She just ramped it up. She literally (and figuratively) gave the Senate the finger.
On Wednesday, in the seat of Australian democracy, she got physical. It was a petty, pathetic gesture – tearing up Pauline Hanson’s motion to refer Fatima Payman’s constitutional eligibility to an inquiry and flinging it at the One Nation leader in the Senate chamber – but it crossed a line and the Senate responded by kicking her out until the end of the week (effectively, the end of the Parliamentary sitting year).
Labor moved that Thorpe be suspended and the Coalition and cross bench universally supported it – another rare occurrence.
The Greens did not. They were roundly condemned for not doing so, but it should not have come as a surprise to anyone. Like Thorpe, the Greens have no respect for the institutions of our democracy or for Australia and its people. It’s their standard operating model to routinely trash our great nation. That’s what Marxists have always done since Comrade Karl published his manifesto back in 1848, creating a movement that has murdered more than 100 million people across the world, and which continues to oppress billions of people today.
Regardless of her suspension this week, Thorpe is very likely to continue escalating. The Senate waited too long to draw the line in the sand – they should have decisively dealt with her all the way back when she tried to abuse her affirmation when she was sworn in as a Senator.
While Thorpe lacks the capacity to honestly reflect on her conduct or view any issue or individual outside her racism framework, she’s not stupid. Her entire schtick is that she’s a victim of racist colonisers, despite being descended from them, and being suspended from the Senate fits that delusion of victimhood quite well. She’s been admonished for now, but as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, Thorpe will be back in the news for committing yet another outrage.
