All unvaccinated workers in the public sector, apart from those in health, aged care and border control, were told by the PM they can return to work from 4 April. This includes teachers, childcare workers, police officers, ambos, defence force staff, and public servants... which should make for some pretty awkward moments around the office water cooler next month I expect. With the end of NZ’s COVID vaccine pass system, many private sector businesses like hairdressers and restaurants, will also be free to invite unvaccinated workers back to work.

It was a long time coming but the Queensland Council of Civil Liberties finally came out swinging this week with a blistering attack on the Government’s new Bill extending its use of ‘emergency powers’. The QCCL President said in his submission that “The concept of a permanent state of emergency is inconsistent with the whole concept of a liberal political order” and that “Freedom has enormous value in our society and that includes the freedom to take on some risk.” In warning that there's now a real danger of these extraordinary powers becoming ‘normalised’, he emphasised that, “These are the most Draconian powers that have ever existed in Queensland, including in wartime.”
