One Nation Raises Free Speech Concerns Over Labor’s Digital Duty of Care Bill

Comments by Albo in New York made it crystal clear what his Digital Duty of Care Bill is about. It is censorship, pure and simple. It is the sort of thing you'd expect a dictatorship to be flirting with, not a mature democracy. The free speech of all Australians is on the line.

Despite claiming a few weeks ago that this Bill was about safety, Albo's comments yesterday make it clear that it is about Labor Ministers having the power to decide what is acceptable and what isn't when it comes to free discussion online. In Albo's words: "People are moving away from the centre and more and more to the extremes, be they of the left or the right, and that is why we think this is a very positive move that we are (putting) forward."

Reading between the lines, it is very clear what Albo has in mind and what motivated this Bill. Albo and his ministers will have total discretion to decide what counts as "extreme" and what counts as "polarisation". He wants to muzzle millions of his fellow countrymen and women. Anyone who dares to disagree with him, it seems.

Whatever you think about the current US administration, the decision by the US Embassy in Canberra to launch a broadside against the Digital Duty of Care Bill on free speech grounds makes it clear how unprecedented and dangerous to democracy this move by the Labor government is.

It has never been more important that we unite to fight this Bill with everything we have got. If you haven't already done so, write to your Federal MP and Senators requesting that they oppose the Digital Duty of Care Bill.
