Petition to the Senate: Reconsideration of the Sex Discrimination (Acknowledging Biological Reality) Bill 2024

To the Honourable President and Members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:

We, the undersigned citizens of Australia, urge the Senate to reconsider and pass the Sex Discrimination (Acknowledging Biological Reality) Bill 2024.

This Bill, introduced by Senator Pauline Hanson, seeks to restore clarity to the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 by reaffirming the biological definitions of "man" and "woman" and removing the concept of "gender identity" from the Act. The inclusion of "gender identity" as a protected attribute in 2013 has created significant ambiguity around the legal definitions of sex, leading to significant consequences that undermine women’s rights and safety.

We believe that the biological distinctions between men and women are fundamental, immutable, and must be the foundation upon which legal protections are based. This Bill seeks to protect the rights of women by preserving female-only spaces and safeguarding the integrity of the legal recognition of sex, which is critical to women’s safety, privacy, and equality.

By rejecting this Bill, the Senate is failing to acknowledge the real harm being done to women's rights and spaces in the name of inclusivity. The recent court rulings, such as the case of Sall Grover’s Giggle app, highlight how the rights of biological women are being compromised. The erosion of these spaces risks undoing decades of progress in women’s rights.

We call upon the Senate to stand with biological women and protect the hard-won rights they have fought for. Passing this Bill is essential to ensuring that these spaces and rights are not overwritten by gender ideology.

Therefore, we respectfully request that the Senate give due consideration to this Bill and vote in favour of passing the Sex Discrimination (Acknowledging Biological Reality) Bill 2024.
