The Fight for Freedom of Speech – Round Two

Labor just can’t help themselves.

They’ve never understood freedom of speech or how it works, and people always fear what they don’t understand. Labor has previous form in trying to silence legitimate dissent in Australia.

About a dozen years ago, Julia Gillard controversially tried to gag the Australian media with anti free speech legislation at a time when they were being highly critical of her minority government.

Gillard effectively tried to put out a media dumpster fire by pouring a truckload of petrol on it. All it did was increase the criticism, and Gillard was eventually forced to abandon her hamfisted attempt to control free speech.

The Coalition under Tony Abbot and Malcolm Turnbull didn’t attempt anything like it but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit Australia, Scott Morrison worked with big tech and social media to suppress and censor free speech that criticised the trampling of our rights under ‘pandemic measures’ like lockdowns and vaccine mandates.

And then along came Anthony Albanese, who said “hold my beer” and started a new fight against freedom of speech.

He decided that Australians were too stupid to sort out for ourselves what was truthful information on social media. Labor has never trusted the Australian people it claims to serve in government, and they showed this in spades with their first ‘misinformation and disinformation’ bill. It would have given the government the power to say what was true, and silence any views it determined to be false.

But even Albo couldn’t get the support for it, and withdrew the legislation. You’d hope that would be the end of it, but free speech frightens him so much – especially now that he’s coming under more criticism as the worst PM in history – he’s introduced a new bill this week aimed at doing the same thing.

He didn’t even bother changing the name of the bill for this round two of his bout against free speech. He’s ignored the growing chorus of Australian voices who say they will not be silenced, least of all by PM as weak and pathetic as Albo.

As we were in round one, One Nation is up for the fight in defence of free speech. Without it, there is no democracy in Australia. Join us in the fight and let Labor know that Australians will not be silenced.
