Trump Wins
Many Australians wonder why American politics matters so much. Is it the dominance of the US media? The spectacle of the world’s most powerful nation choosing its leader through a unique electoral college system? Or maybe it’s the lively characters these elections bring to the fore, especially of late?
What puzzles most people is why so many get so invested in American politics. Partisan rifts have broken families and friendships apart even here in Australia. It’s not just an American problem.
For what it’s worth, a key reason lies in the impact a stable American relationship has on Australia’s trade and military needs. With a shift in policy, a new President can alter trade terms or end a military alliance at will.
A strong US economy with steady local demand drives much of the world’s economy, even as China rises in influence. Australia also has a close military relationship with the United States, initially forged in the trenches on the Western Front, cemented on the battlefields of the Second World War, and formalised with the ANZUS alliance in 1951.
Radicalised leftie hysteria over Trump’s election—including foolish comments from people like Kevin Rudd, Australia’s failed United States ambassador—points to a mindset bent on fostering division. An electorate that gave Trump a resounding victory dismissed the disgraceful display from the Kamala Harris campaign, which called Trump "Hitler" and his rallies "fascist gatherings."
The attacks Trump has endured over the last eight to nine years are like those Pauline Hanson has faced for decades.
One Nation’s goal is a country where we can raise our children in prosperity, free from excessive government interference, but Australia is not isolated from global affairs, and we need a peaceful, prosperous world too. If One Nation is to succeed in its aims for peace and stability, we will seek out partners who share and support that vision. Congratulations, President-Elect Trump.
